The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), a key organization representing freelancers in Pakistan, has issued an urgent appeal to the relevant authorities to resolve ongoing internet disruptions and restore full service capacity immediately. This call to action underscores the critical need for a stable and secure internet connection, which is essential for freelancers to deliver quality work and continue contributing to Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves.
Tufail Ahmed Khan, President & CEO of PAFLA, emphasized that freelancers have been severely affected by slow internet speeds and frequent outages over the past three weeks. These disruptions have not only delayed project completions but also hindered freelancers from securing new clients, leading to substantial revenue losses.
“Pakistan ranks as the fourth-largest freelancing market in the world, with over 2.3 million full-time and part-time freelancers,” stated Khan. “If these issues persist, our global ranking on freelancing platforms could suffer, which would further harm the industry.”
The impact of these challenges extends beyond full-time freelancers. Many students rely on freelancing to finance their education, while numerous educated housewives undertake freelance projects to support their families amid rising inflation. According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan, freelancers in the country generated $350 million in FY 2023-24, reflecting a 40% year-on-year growth. This highlights the sector’s rapid expansion, potential, and significance to the national economy.
Ibrahim Amin, Co-Founder & Chairman of PAFLA, pointed out that most freelancers in Pakistan have turned to freelancing after facing difficulties in finding jobs in the private and public sectors. The recent internet disruptions have once again put them in a difficult situation. Amin also noted that PAFLA, in collaboration with partner universities and educational institutions, regularly conducts seminars for freelancers in major cities and smaller towns, attracting large and enthusiastic audiences. However, the current disruptions have dampened the spirits of many aspiring freelancers.
Amin appealed to the authorities to urgently address the internet issues and restore full services. “A stable and reliable internet connection is crucial for freelancers to sustain their livelihoods and support their families. The ongoing situation not only damages the reputation of Pakistani freelancers but also poses a serious threat to the broader economy,” he stressed.
