1. Introduction to GKS-U

What is GKS-U?
The Global Korea Scholarship for Undergraduates (GKS-U) is a Korean Government initiative aimed at attracting international students for undergraduate studies in Korea. This scholarship enhances global educational exchange and strengthens ties between Korea and participating countries.

Available Degree Programs

  • Associate Degree: 1 year of Korean language training + 2-3 years of degree program.
  • Bachelor’s Degree: 1 year of Korean language training + 4-6 years of degree program.
    Note: TOPIK level 5 or 6 allows direct enrollment into the degree program without language training.

Application Tracks

  • Embassy Track: Apply through the South Korean Embassy in your home country. Choose up to three universities.
  • University Track: Apply directly to a specific university, choosing from UIC, Regional Universities, or Associate Degree programs.

Universities for Embassy Track:

  • Type A: Includes Ajou University, Ewha Womans University, Korea University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and more.
  • Type B: Includes Busan University of Foreign Studies, Chonnam National University, Gyeongsang National University, and more.

Universities for University Track:

  • UIC: Ajou University, Kookmin University, Pusan National University, and others.
  • Regional Universities: Includes Chonnam National University, Daegu University, Jeju National University, and more.
  • Associate Degree: Kyungbok University, Yeungjin University.

Application Process and Eligibility
Apply either through the embassy (Embassy Track) or directly to universities (University Track). Eligibility varies by country and track. Refer to the official guidelines for detailed information.


2. Embassy Track vs. University Track

Embassy Track:

  • Process: Apply through your home country’s Korean Embassy. Select up to three universities.
  • Selection Rounds: Three rounds including embassy review and NIIED forwarding to universities.
  • Slots: Fewer slots compared to University Track.
  • Flexibility: Apply to multiple universities.

University Track:

  • Process: Apply directly to a specific university.
  • Selection Rounds: Two rounds, university review followed by NIIED confirmation.
  • Slots: Typically more slots available.
  • Flexibility: Limited to one university application.

Documents Required:

  • Embassy Track: One original set + three copies.
  • University Track: One original set.

Choosing the Right Track:

  • Embassy Track: Ideal for applicants with strong profiles and those who wish to apply to multiple universities.
  • University Track: Suitable for those targeting specific universities or programs.

3. Eligibility & Restrictions for GKS-U 2025

Eligibility:

  • Nationality: Must be from NIIED-designated countries. Dual citizenship or former Korean citizenship may disqualify.
  • Education Level: High school graduates or those with an associate degree.
  • Age: Must be under 25 years old.
  • Health: Must be in good mental and physical health.
  • Criminal History: No disqualifications for overseas travel.

Restrictions:

  • Education Background: Graduates from Korean high schools or online Korean programs are ineligible.
  • Prior Scholarships: Previous GKS degree scholars are not eligible.
  • Duplicate Applications: Can only apply through one track.

4. Required Documents for GKS-U 2025

7. Recommendation Letter (Form-4) Guidelines
